Who Invented Bowling?

May 21, 2014

According to the International Bowling Museum and Hall of Fame, bowling has been traced back to ancient Egypt around 3200 B.C.

  • Bowling was outlawed in England by King Edward II in 1366 so his troops wouldn't be distrcted from archery practice.
  • Many European countries play 9 pin games that were based on Italian Bocce ball.
  • The first American bowling was lawn bowling in New York.  A popular area of New Yook is still known as Bowling Green.

5 Pin Bowling was invented in 1909 by Dr. Thomas F. Ryan of the Toronto Bowling Club.  People were complaining that 10 pin bowling was too "strenusous".

5 Pin Bowling is only played in Canada.

Regardless of who invented it, bowling today is enjoyed by millions around the globe as a fun way to socialized, exercize and have a great time!
